Sonapur

Probable Scholars say

Sonapur was an old port where the Bahuda river meets the sea in south Odisha. Ships loaded up on oysters here until sand banks blocked the way in.

Sonapur was an old port in south Odisha. It sat where the Bahuda river reaches the sea. Historians think ships once loaded up on oysters here. Sand bars later blocked the way in. The port then lost its importance. [Patra, 2014, pp. 121-122]

For scholars

Only one source was read here. So the tier stops at Probable. It gives no inscription, text or dig date for Sonapur itself. Other ports in this atlas have that kind of proof; Sonapur does not. The “early-historic” tag follows this source’s general framing of old Odisha ports. It is not independently dated. The account traces back to a 1918 district manual. That manual was not read directly here. [Patra, 2014, pp. 121-122]

Routes through Sonapur

  • Palur to Sonapur

Palur and Sonapur were both old ports on the south Odisha coast, a short sail apart. Ships likely worked their way down the coast from one to the next.

Palur (p. 121) and Sonapur (pp. 121-122, 'where river Bahuda enters into the Bay of Bengal ... 20 km away from Berhampur') are treated in sequence as ports of ancient Odisha along the same stretch of coast.)
  • Sonapur to Barua

Sonapur and Barua were both small ports further south along the same old coast. A Greek geographer wrote about places like these long ago.

Scholar notes

Only one source was read, so the tier stops at Probable. Patra gives no inscription, text or excavation date specifically for Sonapur (unlike Palur or Barua, tied to Ptolemy); the 'early-historic' tag follows the paper's general framing of these as ports of 'ancient Odisha' and is not independently dated. Ultimate source is Maltby's 1918 Ganjam District Manual, not read directly. Exact modern site position beyond the Bahuda mouth is not given.

Sand bars later 'offered obstruction to shipping and the port lost its importance.' Cites Maltby, Ganjam District Manual (1918), p. 34.)
